Common applications of board

There are a large number of common uses of board. This is because board is a sheet material that can be used in many different ways. It is widely used in the construction industry, but also by private individuals. Board can be divided into two categories, namely softboard and hardboard. The common applications of board can therefore also be divided into these two categories. You can always come to us to order board. We have both softboard and hardboard in our range. What exactly is softboard?

As indicated, the common uses of board can be divided based on the two variants of board, namely softboard and hardboard. What exactly is softboard? This is a soft fibre board composed of wood fibres. These wood fibres contain the substance lignin, a natural binding material. This makes the wood fibres adhere well to each other, even without an added binding agent. The wood fibres are first wetted and then formed into a board. During drying, the wood fibres attach to each other and the final board material is created. Softboard has several important characteristics. For instance, it is sensitive to moisture, has sound-absorbing qualities and is a porous material.

Common applications of softboard

When we look at the applications of board, and specifically those of softboard, we see a nice row of possibilities listed. For instance, softboard is widely used to thermally insulate walls and floors. In addition, the material is often used as a subfloor. In the glass industry, softboard is often chosen to serve as packaging material and many private individuals like to make it into a bulletin board for family messages. Softboard is also used as door filling and for panelling ceilings. In addition, fun DIY projects are made with softboard, such as a pinboard.

What exactly is hardboard?

hardboard is the second variant of board. Unlike softboard, this board material is pressed under high pressure and a high temperature. The wood fibres are wetted and then pressed onto a copper mesh net with a fine structure. This copper mesh leaves an imprint on the board, which you can always see on the back of the board. In certain cases, glue is added. This is synthetic resin glue, which makes the plate just that little bit more solid.

Common applications of hardboard

Also for hardboard there are variants with and without perforations. As a result, there are several common uses of board in the form of hardboard. For example, the board material is often used as a material for cladding, back panels and hardboard is also often used for bed bases, for example. In the latter case, the perforated form is almost always chosen. This variant is also very suitable for making your own hanging systems in the private shed or professional workshop.

Lacquered board: a finished variant of hardboard

hardboard also exists in a finished variant; lakboard namely. This variant has been given a plastic top layer on the side where the imprint of the copper mesh is. This top layer is coloured white, making it already the right colour for many applications. This layer is also easy to paint over if you want a different colour. To do this, however, you first need to lightly sand the layer. Sanding is only recommended for Lakboard, as ordinary hardboard loses structural quality when sanded.

Do you also want to get started with one of the common applications of board? Then it is good to know that the board material is available in several standard thickness sizes. The difference between the two thickness sizes is very small, but can still make a big difference within a project. You can order board with a thickness of 3.2 millimetres (lakboard) and you can order board sheets with a thickness of exactly 3 (hardboard) millimetres. Softboard is usually 8.5 millimetres thick.
